Profile:
Hase represented Japan nationally in the amaresu field at the 1984 Olympic Games, and was initiated into New Japan in August, 1985, soon becoming a protégé of Riki Choshu. His debut came while on excursion to Puerto Rico, when he faced Miguel Perez Jr., before returning to New Japan and becoming one of the top junior heavyweights. He enjoyed two reigns as IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Champion, then graduated to the heavyweight division where he would find more success with four IWGP Tag Team Title reigns. Although he never managed to win the IWGP Heavyweight Title, he was always viewed as one of the top superstars, competing well with the likes of Muto, Chono, and Hashimoto. In July, 1995, he became a member of the Japanese government, being elected into the Upper House. In what was originally going to be his retirement match, Hase lost to former disciple, Kensuke Sasaki, on 1/4/96, but he would shock the world by returning to wrestling for New Japan's rivals, All Japan, where he has competed part-time since. On 3/7/01, with the New Japan/All Japan alliance blooming, Hase returned to New Japan as part of Keiji Muto's new BATT faction, and was reunited with his old friend. He again cut off all ties with New Japan in January, 2002, when Muto, along with Satoshi Kojima and Kendo Kashin (two men Hase helped train), left the company to join All Japan full-time. Hase remains an active politician, but wrestles often for All Japan, and still enjoys in-ring activity. Known widely as one of the most unselfish wrestlers ever, Hase is a much loved and respected figure, and although no longer a young man, remains a stellar technician.
